KIUC Signs on for Large Scale Solar Electric System

Līhu‘e, Kaua`i, HI – 10/07/10 – Kaua‘i Island Utility Cooperative (KIUC) signed a contract today with Poipu Solar, LLC for a 3-megawatt (MW) photovoltaic (PV) facility in Koloa on Knudsen Trust land.

This large scale solar project, to be developed, owned and operated by an affiliate of AES Solar Power, LLC, once online will be the largest fully operational PV system on Kaua‘i.

“This project will provide clean renewable energy to power more than 850 homes, for the next 20 years, at a fixed price not tied to oil,” said KIUC Acting President & Chief Executive Officer David Bissell, “and nearly doubles Kauai’s solar electric power penetration.”

The 3 MW polycrystalline panel facility will be integrated with a Battery Energy Storage System (BESS) installed by KIUC at the point of interconnection to the grid.

“We will be installing a battery storage system, which will enable integration of this large scale PV system with our Koloa Substation and provide additional system wide stability,” said KIUC Engineering Manager Mike Yamane.

Bissell added, this brings us another step closer to meeting our Strategic Planning goal of becoming 50 percent renewable by 2023.

At the September 28 KIUC Board of Directors meeting, the board approved a resolution, authorizing KIUC to sign a purchase agreement with the developer.

Pending the Public Utilities Commission approval, construction on the project will begin in 2011.
